MCL Chicago was founded July of 2014 in response to the rise in popularity of musical improv and musical comedy in the Chicago comedy scene [What is Music Improv?]. Specifically emerging from MINt: Music Improv Night (Wednesdays at 7:30pm) MCL Chicago founders Stephanie McCullough, Alex Garday, and Michael Shepherd Jordan were elected to the Studio BE, NFP Board by Aaron Shapiro to re-brand the theater from Studio BE into the home for music comedy it is today. To our knowledge, MCL is the first, and only theater in the national dedicated to the art of music improv and music comedy.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The legal name of the theater is "MCL Chicago." The "MCL" represents the hope of music and/or comedy happening live on the stage each night. This does not mean that you will only see music comedy in the space, but simply that we focus the majority of our programming on it. Several shows in the space are what we call Improv Variety shows that host all types of comedy from stand-up, to improv, sketch, clowning and more. Visit our What to See? page for more information.
